I’ve been a professional reader–writer–editor–proofreader in one form or another since 1998. In October 2014 I returned to full-time freelance work after more than a decade away; in-between I worked for more than six years in publishing and around five in the book trade. Mostly I write features, reviews and stories, while I edit anything from academic articles to web text. (Read more on my freelance page.) What more to say? I was born in Los Angeles, California, moved to the English Lake District when I was seven, grew up and was educated in the Windermere area, studied Politics and Modern History at Manchester University for a couple of terms, graduated in Classical Civilisation from Leeds University, lived and worked in Bristol for nearly fifteen years, and then returned to the Lake District at the end of 2016. A lot of things interest me, and I like eating and drinking and thinking about eating and drinking.
Like all true art, the general conduct of a ship and her handling in particular cases had a technique which could be discussed with delight and pleasure by men who found in their work, not bread alone, but an outlet for the peculiarities of their temperament.
