About

I’ve been a professional reader–writer–editor–proofreader in one form or another since 1998. In October 2014 I returned to full-time freelance work after more than a decade away; in-between I worked for more than six years in publishing and around five in the book trade. Mostly I write features, reviews and stories, while I edit anything from academic articles to web text. (Read more on my freelance page.)

What more to say? I was born in Los Angeles, California, moved to the English Lake District when I was seven, grew up and was educated in the Windermere area, studied Politics and Modern History at Manchester University for a year, graduated in Classical Civilisation from Leeds University, lived and worked in Bristol for nearly fifteen years, and then returned to the Lake District at the end of 2016. A lot of things interest me, and I like eating and drinking and thinking about eating and drinking.

Like all true art, the general conduct of a ship and her handling in particular cases had a technique which could be discussed with delight and pleasure by men who found in their work, not bread alone, but an outlet for the peculiarities of their temperament.
